Converting stereo to mono combines information from the left and right channels into one channel. The result plays the same content through both sides of most playback systems and can reduce file size when stereo separation is unnecessary.
Mono is commonly used for voice recordings, interviews, lectures, radio material, accessibility workflows, and devices where a stereo image provides little benefit.
The downmix includes both source channels instead of discarding one side. This matters when instruments, speakers, or effects exist only in the left or right channel.
