Compare Two Folders

Selected file contents are checked locally in your browser and are not uploaded.

Check a backup after copying photos, moving documents or transferring files to another drive. This folder comparison matches relative paths and shows missing files, different contents, files only in the backup and identical files.

Select the original folder and its backup, then compare. Folder names may differ; the paths inside them determine which files are paired. A file is marked identical only after its contents have been checked, including files with the same size or date.

Filter the results by type or search a path. The CSV report includes every completed comparison and the byte sizes on both sides. All reading stays in your browser, and the comparison is read-only.

How to compare two folders

  1. Choose the original folder and the backup folder you want to check.
  2. Select Compare folders and wait for the content checks. You may cancel and continue later on this page.
  3. Review missing and changed files, use the filters if needed, and download the full CSV report.

Folder comparison FAQ

What is a matching relative path?

A file at photos/trip.jpg is paired with the same path inside the other folder. The selected root folder names are ignored. Paths remain case-sensitive; different paths are separate files.

Do matching sizes and dates prove that files are identical?

No. The tool checks the contents of same-sized files. Files with different contents are reported even when their names, sizes or modification dates are the same.

Can I compare large files?

Files are read in small pieces rather than loaded completely into memory. Large folders and files take longer. If the directory list exceeds the memory budget, select smaller subfolders and compare them separately.

What happens if I cancel or change folders?

Cancel keeps completed results. Continue comparison reuses them and checks the remaining files. Selecting another folder clears the old results. The CSV includes all completed rows, even when the screen is filtered.

Why are empty folders missing, and can I use a phone?

The browser supplies files and their paths, so empty folders are not included. Folder selection on a phone depends on the browser and its file picker. Use a browser that allows selecting directories.
