Generate a continuous or timed test tone from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Choose a waveform, set a safe volume, or use common frequency presets.

The tone is produced by the Web Audio API and never leaves the browser. Gain ramps are used when starting and stopping to reduce audible clicks.

Frequency and waveform

Sine waves contain one frequency, while square, triangle, and sawtooth waves include additional harmonics and sound brighter. The nearest musical note is an approximation based on A4 at 440 Hz.

Hearing safety

Begin with the volume low and stop immediately if a tone is uncomfortable. Headphones can produce high sound pressure even when the browser volume appears modest. Very low and very high frequencies may be inaudible but can still drive speakers.

How to generate and play a frequency

  1. Enter a frequency from 20 to 20,000 Hz or choose one of the preset buttons.
  2. Choose a waveform and duration, then set the volume low before starting, especially when using headphones.
  3. Start the tone, adjust the frequency if needed, and stop immediately if the sound is uncomfortable.

Tone generator FAQ

How do I play an exact frequency?

Enter any value from 20 to 20,000 Hz in the Frequency field. The display also shows the period and nearest equal-tempered note for the current value.

Which waveform should I choose?

Use sine for a single clean frequency. Square, triangle, and sawtooth waves contain additional harmonics, so they sound brighter or sharper even at the same frequency.

Why can I not hear a very high frequency?

Hearing sensitivity and speaker or headphone response decrease at frequency extremes. Not hearing a high tone does not prove that the generator or your audio device is faulty.

Can I download the generated tone?

No. This page is designed for immediate continuous or timed playback and does not export an audio file.
