Which settings usually reduce GIF file size the most?

Reducing pixel width and frame rate often produces the largest savings because fewer pixels and frames must be stored. Lowering the color count can reduce size further, but the best combination depends on the animation.

How many colors should I use?

Start with 128 colors. Flat graphics and simple screen recordings may look good with fewer colors, while photos and gradients may need more. Use the preview to check banding and lost detail.

What does GIF dithering change?

Dithering mixes palette colors into patterns to make gradients look smoother. It can also add visible grain or reduce compression efficiency. None is often suitable for flat graphics with clean color areas.

Should I keep the original timing or choose a frame rate?

Keep original timing preserves the source frame delays. Choosing a fixed frame rate samples the animation at regular intervals, which may add or remove frames and change how smooth the motion looks.

Will GIF transparency be preserved?

The optimizer keeps a transparent palette entry when the source uses transparency, but resizing, color reduction, and dithering can change the appearance of transparent edges. Check the preview before downloading.
