How to read an audio spectrogram

Time runs from left to right, while frequency rises from the bottom of the spectrogram. Brighter colors mean more energy at that time and frequency. Use the waveform for level changes and exact transients, then use the spectrogram to see whether a sound is narrow-band, harmonic, or spread across many frequencies.

Common audio noise patterns

A thin horizontal line often indicates a steady tone or electrical whine. Repeating lines at 50 Hz or 60 Hz and their multiples can indicate mains hum. Broadband hiss fills a wider frequency area, clipping produces flattened waveform peaks, and a click or pop appears as a short vertical burst across many frequencies.

What the automatic checks measure

Peak level and clipping use decoded sample values. The noise floor is estimated from quieter analysis frames, spectral flatness helps distinguish noise-like energy from tones, and hum checks compare 50 Hz and 60 Hz harmonics with nearby frequencies. These measurements are practical indicators rather than laboratory-calibrated SNR or acoustic noise readings.
