What determines whether an M4A file plays directly?
M4A is an audio container commonly holding AAC or ALAC. Playback depends on the codec inside, not only the extension. You do not need to enter raw PCM parameters for a normal M4A file.
Play local M4A files, change the speed, listen to individual channels and repeat a section without editing the recording.

Filename hints only fill defaults. Check the parameters and confirm before playback.

Playback, PCM interpretation and WAV downloads run in your browser. Your audio files are not uploaded to a server.
The browser remembers positions for recent files on this device. Add the same file again to restore its position. Files themselves are not saved, and raw PCM still requires parameter confirmation.
