The study, published Monday in the journal Psychology of Popular Media Culture, says technology and the screens that consume us are creating “technoference” in couples.
Specifically, I focus here on the potential for technology interference in couple and family relationships—times when technology devices intrude, interrupt, and/or get in the way of couple and family communication and interactions. I term this "technoference."
About 25% of couples have fought over phubs (Goldberg, 2018). Other researchers have labeled this problem “technoference,” because technology interference clogs up conversations, dates, and initimate lives (McDaniel & Coyne, 2016).
