Strain transfer will inevitably occur through an interphase between the fibres and the matrix so this region is of obvious importance to the performance of a composite.
This book addresses several aspects and methodologies related to the micromechanics of contact and interphase layers, ranging from the rigorous method of asymptotic expansions to the practical application of the finite element method.
The metal part of the interphase probably consists of several layers of ions embedded in the electron "cloud" of the metal.

As the work of adhesion is equal to the sum of surface tensions of both phases minus the interphase tension on the interface, its increase is evidence of lowering of exactly the interphase tension, as the surface tension of slag is practically independent of the partial pressure of oxygen P_(O2) in the gas phase and P_(O2) influence on adhesion is entirely determined by the features of the metal-slag interface.
The interphase mass transfer processes between the gas and the liquid phases together with chemical transformations are applied for syntheses of new materials [2], separations of gas mixtures by absorption [3] and for heat potential augmentation in the heat pumps.
The main conclusions are that interphase spacers prevent flashovers due to galloping and ice loads and that there are still galloping displacements and the resulting dynamic loads but large amplitude motions appear to have been eliminated.
